Course Description

This is an IBITA certified Advanced level Bobath course offered to physiotherapists and occupational therapists in possession of an IBITA recognized Basic Course certificate.  In addition to theory, clinical reasoning and practical sessions the Advanced course offers supervised/mentored treatment sessions with patients.

This course will explore the topic of neuromodulation, the foundation of the diversity of motoneuronal states.  The theoretical component of this course will discuss neuromodulation from the perspective of spinal and supraspinal interactions, including the role of neuromodulation in locomotion.  Extrinsic forms of neuromodulation will be discussed.  The practical and clinical aspects of this course will explore how the manipulation of sensory information through specific use of therapeutic handling and the use of the environment can be utilized to influence neuromodulation to enhance typical motor behaviour.

Through patient demonstrations, patient treatment sessions and practical sessions the course participant will gain an opportunity to translate theoretical knowledge into clinical applications to address functional recovery in persons with neurological conditions.  The model of Bobath clinical practice will be utilized to explore clinical reasoning at an Advanced level.

Course Objectives
The course participant will gain an understanding of:

  • Neuromodulation and motor neuron behaviour
  • The intrinsic capability of the spinal cord
  • Supraspinal influences on neuromodulation, including monoaminergic effects
  • Locomotion and sensorimotor interactions with respect to neuromodulation
  • The role of extrinsic neuromodulation
  • The use of the model of Bobath clinical practice (MBCP) to explicate the clinical presentation and treatment plan of an individual with neurological dysfunction
