Course Description
This is a 2-day introductory level course open to Physiotherapists and Occupational therapists. This practical course utilizes a best practice approach that blends theoretical evidence presented in lecture format with clinical expertise through client demonstrations and practical labs.

This is an introductory level course providing an opportunity for exploration of the movement transitions sit to stand to sit. These transitions are essential, basic activities of daily living, a primary determinant of independence, equally as important as ambulation and are a focus of neuro-rehabilitation for functional recovery. The theoretical component of this course will also discuss the neurophysiology underpinning the interactive relationship of postural control and selective movement for successful sit to stand to sit.  Through patient demonstration, and practical sessions the course participant will gain an opportunity to translate theoretical knowledge into clinical applications to address functional recovery of sit to stand to sit. The model of Bobath clinical practice will be utilized to explore clinical reasoning at an introductory level.

Objectives
The course participant will gain an understanding of:

  • The relationship of sit to stand to sit movement strategies and maximal functional recovery
  • The neurophysiology underpinning postural control and successful sit to stand to sit.
  • Bobath interventions to address movement components essential to successful sit to stand to sit.
  • The use of the model of Bobath clinical practice to explicate the clinical presentation and treatment plan of an individual with neurological dysfunction
